The Secret to Delicious Leftover Pizza Dough Treats
These Are Rich, I Kid You Not!
Every once in a while, we have leftover pizza dough. The original plan was to create cinnamon rolls for Easter breakfast. However, we quickly realized we were out of cinnamon. Oh well, let’s move on to the next great ingredient for our pastries: CHOCOLATE. Who doesn’t love chocolate, honestly?
These buns are ridiculously chocolatey and include just the right amount of orange flavor, resulting in a delightfully sticky treat. Given the allergies in our house, this recipe is both dairy and egg-free, though they are not vegan.
Quick and Easy Recipe
This recipe is quick and easy. It's prepped and baked in no time, making it perfect for a last-minute dessert or breakfast treat.
The original recipe uses two pizza dough balls and yields twelve buns. If you want to make fewer treats, you can easily cut this recipe in half and use just one dough ball along with half the filling.
Let’s Get Started Making These Sticky Buns
To prepare your buns, gather the following ingredients:
Ingredients
2 x Crust & Crackle pizza dough balls
Chocolate Marmalade Filling
1 cup Cocoa Powder
1 ½ cup Brown Sugar
2 tsp Vanilla
1/2 tsp Salt
¾ cup Orange Marmalade
½ cup Olive Oil
Milk Wash
3 tbsp Oat Milk
1 tbsp Granulated Sugar
Honey Marmalade Glaze
½ cup Honey
1 Orange (zested)
1 Orange (juiced)
1 tsp Vanilla
¼ cup Orange Marmalade
Prepare each recipe before assembling the buns.
Instructions
Mix all the filling ingredients together in a bowl until well combined.
In a small pot, combine all the ingredients for the glaze. Warm gently to melt and stir together. Allow this mixture to cool slightly until it reaches a sticky consistency.
In a separate small bowl, stir together the milk and sugar for the milk wash.
Assembly
Preparing the Dough Balls
If using one dough ball, skip this step.
You could try re-balling the two dough balls together, but be aware that the olive oil coating may make this difficult. Instead, follow these steps:
Dust your work surface with flour to prevent sticking.
Take the first portion of dough and flatten it into a small square, roughly 6” x 6”. Be careful to avoid any thin spots in the dough.
Repeat this process with the second ball of dough and lay it on top of the first. Ensure the two layers stick together.
Dust the top of the dough with flour before rolling it out.
Roll the dough into a rectangle, approximately 8” wide and 12” long.
Spread the chocolate filling evenly across the entire surface of the dough, ensuring it reaches the edges.
Tightly roll the dough, sealing the edge against the roll to prevent it from unrolling.
Prepare your baking dish or dishes if necessary. Line your baking pan with parchment paper and lightly oil the surface. The dish should have 2” sides or taller.
Using dental floss, cut twelve equal-sized buns. Wrap the dental floss around the dough and pull tight; this will make a clean cut.
10. Place each bun onto the lightly oiled parchment paper.
11. Fill the pan loosely with the buns. Be cautious not to overcrowd; they can touch, but ensure there’s enough space to bake properly.
12. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
13. Allow the buns to proof while the oven is preheating.
14. Brush the tops of the buns with the milk wash.
15. Bake for 30 minutes or longer if the buns are still doughy in the center.
16. Once baked, remove the buns from the oven, but leave them in the baking dish.
17. Drizzle a generous amount of the honey marmalade glaze over the buns, allowing them to cool completely. This will create a deliciously sticky texture.
Enjoy Your Buns
These buns are best enjoyed on the same day they're baked. Ideally, they’re at their finest when eaten straight from the oven. Grab a napkin or two and dig in!
The best food should be messy, so embrace the stickiness and enjoy every bite!
This recipe was created to be dairy and egg-free. However, if you prefer, you can substitute the oil for butter and replace the oat milk with traditional dairy or any other dairy alternative you like. For an even richer treat, consider adding a spoonful of chocolate marmalade filling for extra indulgence.
